AN INVESTIGATION BY THE SUN FOUND LUCOZADE TO CONTAIN 3X SUGAR OF A DONUT

SPORTS drinks can contain up to five times more sugar than a donut, an investigation by The Sun found.
Famous “energy” brand Lucozade has 4.8 teaspoons of sugar in a 500ml bottle.
That is three times the 1.5 teaspoons in a McDonald’s donut. Another brand, Gatorade, has a massive 7.5 teaspoons of
sugar per 500ml. And Powerade ION4 Isotonic — promoted by Olympic
heptathlon gold medallist Jessica Ennis — has 4.87 teaspoons. 4Move Isontonic Drink contains 9.6 in a slightly larger 700ml bottle. And a study at Oxford University last month found a bottle of 4Move packs 196 calories — and it would take 20 minutes of jogging just to burn that off. The market for sports drinks, which promise improved endurance and hydration, is worth £1billion and growing. But the European Food Safety Authority says anyone exercising less than 45 minutes should stick to drinking water. Sports drinks are only needed by “active individuals
performing endurance exercise”.
Kinvara Carey, of the Natural Hydration Council, said: “For most people, water is the only fluid you need.”
