N6 Million London Taxis Project For Abuja Residents Failed

Image

In 2004 as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai went out and bought hundreds of new buses and taxis to be used for commercial purposes in and around Abuja as part of efforts to ease the transportation system within the city.

Among the vehicles are the popular “London taxis”, which were given out at the rate of N6 million on hire purchase supposedly to commercial transport operators.  However, two years later, the London taxis totally disappeared from the city, while the few buses remaining are struggling to be on the road. Some weeks ago, we tried to find out where these taxis are being kept.  We were able to locate some of them at Shettima Munguno Crescent in the Berger Area of Abuja where they were abandoned after only a few months of use.
