The 24-year-old faces one count of first-degree murder and one of “murder with extreme indifference” for every moviegoer he massacred.
At the hearing yesterday, Holmes spoke his first word in public since his gun rampage in Aurora, Colorado earlier this month. Asked by Judge William Sylvester if he agreed to waive his right to a preliminary hearing within 35 days, he conferred with his lawyers before whispering: “Yes.”
His hair still bright red, Holmes showed no emotion when told he faces a total of 142 charges over the slayings at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. They include 116 counts of attempted murder — two each for every person injured, just like the murder raps — one of possessing explosives and a violent crime sentence enhancement.
Cops said he ordered more than 6,000 rounds of ammunition online and bought four weapons from local gun shops.
He booby-trapped his flat with aerial shells, homemade bombs, jars of explosive liquids, bullets and gunpowder, linked by tripwires.
He also sent a notebook detailing his plans to his university psychiatrist. It was found in an unopened package at the college three days after the killings. Cops said it could have been waiting there for eight days. Uni bosses denied it.
Holmes is due back in court on August 9.

By the way, there is a worse case than the Batman killer: Seung-Hui Cho. Cho killed 33 people including himself in the worst mass murder with firearms in the history of North America. He had North Korean blood in his mother’s side and South Korean blood in his father’s side. The two Koreas are still at war to this very day and it is possible the two Koreas are looking forward to reunification.

There is the worst shooter than the Batman killer: Adam Peter Lanza. Lanza did kill 27 people (1 at home and 26 others at school) before he turned the gun on himself. Lanza was cremated without any honors, service, or attendance to the public.
